Quitting Daily Coffee Drinking, Also Known as Nausea Ensues

When I woke up on the morning of October 5, I wasn't planning on doing anything life changing. My husband and I had a date to go and wax our car and then have an outside lunch. So, we did. We woke up early (based on our schedule), had a cup of coffee and got ready to go before having an additional 1/2 cup of coffee a piece.

As a person accustomed to throwing back at least three mugs of coffee morning, I began to feel a bit sickly as we waxed the car. I made up my mind in that moment that this was the time for me to seize the day and do something I have been wanting to do for a while - switch from full-caffeinated coffee to a mostly decaf lifestyle. The occasional cup of hardcore coffee can be a treat, but I do not want to be locked into needing a cup of coffee to avoid headaches or nausea.
I fought the nausea as we went to Culver's and the butterburgers we enjoyed helped to settle me. When we arrived home, I went to sleep and end up snoozing off and on for much of the evening on top of getting, basically, a full nights sleep.

Then, today, the real withdrawals set in. I woke up relatively good but felt like I should have a little something to eat so my stomach would stay settled. Big mistake. The nausea won, and I lost breakfast.

Later in the day we went to add another coat of wax to the car and I began to perk up as we traveled back home and then to Menards. My husband stopped at Walgreens on the way home and we grabbed me a bottle of Aspirin and a coke. I had a few sips of the Coke and ended up losing them (several hours after the initial vomiting). However, I felt like things were mostly done at this point and managed to eat three slices of the Papa John's pizza we picked up for free (yay for Facebook contests! and rare back to back days of fast food) on the way home.

The pizza stayed down and so have two glasses of almond milk since then. I feel like the worst is past though I expect to have a continuation of the killer headache I mostly killed with two aspirin earlier. This is a bit of a problem since I'm staying groggy with the headaches and sickness, and I just learned that my major freelance source is switching channels and I will have to restructure back to other clients. Le sigh.

However, I expect my life to be much easier with decaf consumption. We had already started drinking decaf at night months ago, so I know I enjoy the taste of it just as much as regular coffee and I don't have to deal with the ebbs and flow of caffeine consumption. I'm also looking forward to maintaining a better sleep schedule because of the changes. I have been having a hard time sleeping all night and kept having to fall back on afternoon naps that I dislike.

Considering the relatively vice free (little sugar, few refined foods) lifestyle we lead, this change is good and should lead to substantial money savings given the price of coffee.

...but, boy, the well-being price of beating an addiction, even a subtle one! The only thing that has ever compared for me is moving away from drinking Coke several years ago.

The best way to beat a bad habit is truly to never get started!
